Naming the baby

Giving names Muslim to your children is one of your greatest responsibilities as a Muslim parent. When you, as a Muslim parent, are given the opportunity to give your children names Muslim you must take the responsibility seriously. There are a number of requirements and Islamic laws that dictate the giving of Muslim girl names and Muslim boy names alike.

According to a Hadith a child must be named promptly on birth. The baby name should be meaningful. 'You will be called by your name on the day of judgment' this is another reason why it is important to chose a baby name with good meaning. The prophet (pbuh) was very particular about it.

Prophet Mohammad(SAW) said: “Whoever is named after me with the hope of being blessed, he will be blessed and will be in peace till the Day of Qiyaamah.”
He also said: “To whomever is born a boy and he names him Muhammad solely for the love of me and for the blessings of my name, then both he (the father) and his son will enter Jannah.”

The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) recommended that Muslims should be selective in the names of their children as part of the identity of a Muslim. He recommended that the most beautiful names are those which give servitude or praise to Allah. Combinations of various names is a matter of personal liking and choice. Names of Allah should never be used alone. There is no harm if the child is named before Aqeeqa (the 7th day after the birth of a child), but if the naming has not been done, and then the child should be named on the seventh day.

Naming a child with a beautiful and honourable name is very important. The Prophet always chose names with good and beautiful meanings, even telling people to change their names if they had unpleasant meanings.

Ibn Umar (RA) reported that Allah's Messenger said that "the names dearest to Allah are Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman."
